Diary of a Founder:
Celebrating 15 Years of Grace

Fifteen years on, it feels fitting to look back at where Grace began, and the wild, wonderful journey that’s followed. So, thank you for believing in us and helping shape Grace into what it is today. Here’s to fifteen years of the women who inspire us in everything we create.

Take us back 15 years, to the very first Grace Loves Lace office in Burleigh Heads. What did a typical day look like for you back then?

Those early days were completely unhinged because I was doing everything. Like most founders in the start-up phase, I didn’t have the luxury of having any help. I started GLL on my own, with no financial backing or safety net, just a lot of grit and long nights, even when I was exhausted.

My days back then jumped between replying directly to every bride’s enquiry, welcoming brides into my home for one-on-one appointments, quality-controlling each dress in my mum’s factory just up the road, then packing orders and running everything to the post office. I would then spend my nights working on the website, speaking with marketing and advertising partners, sketching ideas, and developing new collections. My average day wouldn’t finish until 2am, and that was generally 7 days a week.

I’m still at a healthy level of chaotic because I love being busy, but now I have an amazing team around me. It means I can now focus most of my time on the areas of the business that play to my strengths and where I’m needed most.

How old were you when you first started Grace?

I was 25! Luckily, at the time, I had no anxiety about starting my own business and just going for it. I realise now that I was a baby, but I was prepared to learn and grow on the job. And I had a really solid foundation, seeing both my parents run their own small businesses, which showed me what it would take.

Is it true you were born on a boat?

I was! I’ve been in Australia since I was four and became a citizen at twelve. Being the daughter of immigrants and arriving in a country we’d never been to, with no family or friends, meant that my parents had to build their own community. They did that by starting their own businesses, which became the way they met people and formed friendships. I think that had a huge influence on me. I saw early on that work and family life can coexist closely, and that you can create a culture of genuine care and connection. That’s what I’m really proud of when it comes to the Grace team.

Where did the name Grace come from?

It’s a family name, but more than anything, it just instantly came to me as I imagined the story of who this woman is. The word Grace feels so feminine, timeless and represents so much without having to say a word.

Tell us, what’s your star sign?

I’m a Libra! I love star signs and have a knack for guessing them. I’m a very typical Libra drawn to beautiful things and to people’s energy and soul, and full of ambition and ideas. Most of all, I love connecting with people.

Since GLL was born in late November, that makes her a Sagittarius. From my knowledge of both star signs, we’re the brand that can’t sit still. There’s always way too much to do, we love love, and our schedule has absolutely no chill. We’re way too passionate!

What was the first Grace gown you designed?

Emme was our first gown, a beautiful stretch lace design with a dropped waist, a silk chiffon skirt, delicate Chantilly lace cap sleeves, and a low scooped back. She was simple, elegant and timeless.

How about the most rogue piece you’ve designed?

Oh, if only you could see our archive of samples that never made it to release… There are quite a few rogue designs in there. Because we design and develop everything in our studio here in Australia, we create a lot. We experiment with fabrics, patterns, and finishes, constantly testing new ideas. Naturally, some designs reach an early stage where we all look at each other and just know it isn’t working. But that’s part of the process - experimenting, draping on mannequins, and plenty of playtime is essential for any designer.

On top of running Grace, you're also a devoted mum to your two boys - what's one thing you do to balance it all?

I’m naturally a very glass-half-full person, and I’m genuinely grateful for everything and everyone, at work and at home. Life feels a lot lighter when you approach it with optimism and appreciation. I don’t see anything as something I have to juggle; I feel lucky that I get to juggle it. That mindset is a game-changer for anyone struggling with ‘all the things.’ It also helps that I love coming to work. I love what I do, I love a challenge, and I love the people I get to do it with.

When I’m really feeling the crunch and genuinely overloaded, I pare things back and focus on what’s a priority. That usually means my social life goes out the window for a little while, because I have too much on my work and home front. I’m good at saying no and knowing what needs to get done to move through chaotic periods. Exercise is also a big part of how I manage my wellbeing, and I’m religious about my vitamins and supplements. I’ve learnt they really do make a difference!

What's something you simply cannot live without every day?

Cuddles from my boys.

How many people work for the brand today?

Almost 200. I’m based in our Australian HQ, and today we have a team spread across 24 boutiques in Australia, the US, Canada, and the UK. It’s surreal to think that what started as a tiny operation has grown into a global community of people who genuinely love what they do.

And finally, who would you one day love to see wearing GLL?

Dream muses would be Dua Lipa, Zoë Kravitz, Margot Robbie, Dakota Johnson, Suki Waterhouse, Sienna Miller, Penélope Cruz… I could go on. I’m drawn to women who are authentic and confident in themselves.
